eduroam Wireless Network at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use the eduroam wireless (wifi) network, which will also enable Internet access at participating universities and institutions.

All Virginia Tech faculty, staff, students, and visitors from participating institutions can connect to the eduroam (education roaming) wireless network at Virginia Tech.

The eduroam service is a worldwide wireless network access system that allows students, faculty, and staff from participating universities to access wireless Internet at other participating institutions. For example, Virginia Tech affiliates can use the eduroam wireless network at Virginia Tech, at the University of Colorado, or at any other participating university. All you need is an Internet-capable computer or mobile device, your PID, and your network password. Conditions for Use of eduroam at Locations Other Than Your Home Institution

By joining the eduroam service as a user you shall be deemed to accept these conditions of use:

  1. When using the eduroam service, you shall always comply with local laws and institutional policies that regulate the use of the service.
  2. You shall not use the eduroam service for any unlawful purpose and not (attempt to) breach or circumvent any administrative or security controls.
  3. You shall respect intellectual property and confidentiality agreements.
  4. You shall protect your access credentials (e.g. private keys or passwords).
  5. Use of the eduroam service is at your own risk. There is no guarantee that the service will be available at any time or that it will suit any purpose.
  6. Logged information is used for administrative, operational, accounting, monitoring and security purposes only. The logged information may be disclosed under lawful order to law enforcement or other entities.
  7. The access-granting bodies and Resource Providers are entitled to regulate, suspend or terminate your access, within their domain of authority, and you shall immediately comply with their instructions.
  8. You are liable for the consequences of you violating any of these conditions of use

Virginia Tech Students, Faculty, and Staff

  • To connect to eduroam on the Blacksburg campus or extended campus:
    1. Verify that you are registered for wireless access at Virginia Tech by following the instructions at Registering Online for Wireless LAN Service.
    2. Create your network password by following the instructions at Forgot Network Password.
    3. Connect your device to the VirginiaTech network, go to the wireless portal at:, and follow the XpressConnect wizard.
    4. If prompted about a VT Global certificate, follow the prompts to accept and allow the certificate.
  • When away from campus, to connect to the eduroam wireless network at a participating institution:
    1. Before you travel, connect to the eduroam wireless network while on the Virginia Tech campus. This verifies that your computer or mobile device is configured properly.
    2. At the participating institution, when you turn on your device, it will automatically connect to eduroam if available.

Visitors to Virginia Tech

The eduroam wireless network is provided to visitors from other participating institutions at your own risk and with no guarantee that the service will be available at any time or that it will suit any purpose. You are bound to your home institutions acceptable use policy.

If your home institution participates with eduroam, contact your home institution for instructions, configuration settings, and support.

If you do not choose to encrypt traffic to and from your computer or mobile device, anyone may be able to see the content of your communication in clear text. This is not specific to eduroam; it's the way most Internet communications work.

However, authentication is accomplished using a federated RADIUS server infrastructure. Your email address identifies which RADIUS server in the eduroam infrastructure should handle your authentication request. When you enter your credentials at any eduroam location, the authentication is encrypted between your computer or mobile device and the servers. Additionally, the authentication method is a challenge-response mechanism, so your computer or mobile device never sends your password over the network.

This means when you log onto eduroam at another participating institution, the login server will recognize the "" in your email address, send your encrypted password to the Virginia Tech authentication server, and accept either a positive or negative response from the Virginia Tech authentication server. The only things that ever see your credentials are your device and the Virginia Tech authentication server.

Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students should not rely on any other university or institution for support with eduroam at another institution. Visited institutions are not prepared to support visitors.
